China imports rose 22% in the first seven months: Test one product and buyer before stocking

Information date: 2 September 2026 — At its 20 August briefing, China’s Ministry of Commerce said imports grew 22% in the first seven months of 2026 and imports from more than 150 trading partners increased. It also reported more than 40 “Export to China” events. The figures justify product-level investigation; they do not prove that a specific foreign brand has market access, a solvent buyer or a profitable route.

Start with the verified fact

The briefing is an official aggregate account of trade performance and promotion activity. It does not allocate the 22% growth by every customs code, origin, price band or buyer type. Commodity prices, a low comparison base and large industrial purchases can influence the total. A sales plan should not multiply last year’s company revenue by the national import rate.

A supplier needs evidence closer to the transaction: customs classification, applicable standards and registration, recent product-level trade data, buyer inventory, channel margin, payment route and after-sales responsibilities. An event meeting is a lead, not an order, and a letter of interest is not evidence that the importer can clear the goods.

How the mechanism reaches an operating decision

A product crosses four gates before cash is collected: legal market access, buyer approval, customs and logistics execution, and payment plus service. The buyer may have demand but lack the required importer role. The product may clear customs but fail platform labelling. A distributor may place a first order yet expect marketing support that removes the supplier’s margin.

Route choice changes control. Direct export, local distribution, cross-border e-commerce and a China entity allocate inventory, tax, data and customer ownership differently. Granting nationwide exclusivity before a test can lock the supplier into an unproven operator just as the market appears to grow.

Choose whether to proceed, redesign or pause

Choose one SKU, use case and accountable buyer for the first test. Proceed when market access, sample acceptance, landed cost and payment evidence are clear. Redesign when demand exists but labelling, pack size or service model needs a limited change. Pause when a prohibited field, unavailable registration, unsupported customs description or unverifiable buyer cannot be resolved.

Price from landed and collected economics, including duty, import VAT, testing, translation, freight, warehouse, channel, returns, foreign exchange and payment delay. A high gross margin at factory gate can become a loss after local obligations.

Turn the decision into an evidence file

  1. Fix one SKU and one proposed customs classification; record unresolved alternatives instead of switching descriptions during clearance.
  2. Verify registration, standard, label, licence and importer obligations through the relevant Chinese primary sources.
  3. Ask the buyer for legal identity, importer role, sample protocol, first-order quantity, payment, inventory and service plan.
  4. Build downside cases for delayed approval, weak sell-through, currency movement and returned inventory.
  5. Run a traceable sample or small order and capture customs, delivery, acceptance, payment and customer-service evidence.
  6. Discuss geographic expansion, inventory commitment or exclusivity only after the first transaction is repeatable.

Run one proportionate review

For China imports rose 22% in the first seven months, review the items that could change the commercial conclusion: the current primary source, the applicable entity and date, the owner of each open task, and the evidence required before money or customer commitments become irreversible. A wording preference is not a control failure. Correct a draft only when a factual error, unsupported claim, missing source, unsuitable taxonomy or unusable action would mislead the reader.

For China imports rose 22% in the first seven months, keep a compact record of the source URL, access date, assumptions, responsible person and next review trigger. When a rule, product or market figure changes, update the affected row and decision instead of rebuilding evidence that remains valid. This preserves traceability while keeping the process economical.

Boundary of the conclusion

The 22% figure is a historical national aggregate, not a forecast or investment recommendation. Product categories can move in opposite directions. Trade-event participation is not government approval of a supplier or buyer.

Export controls, sanctions, dual-use rules and regulated products require additional review in the exporting country and China. The live customs and product rules at shipment date take priority over a general market article.
